IOC announces Olympic Esports Series 2023, with Singapore to host its finals

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has announced the Olympic Esports Series 2023. It is a global virtual and simulated sports competition created by the IOC by collaborating with International Federations and several game publishers. The official press release of the tournament said “The Olympic Esports Series 2023 begins today when both professional and amateur players from around the world are invited to take part in qualification rounds across a host of the featured games.”

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has shared the list of nine games that will be featured in the Olympic Esports Series 2023. Checkout the list below :

  • Motor sport (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile, Gran Turismo).
  • Sailing (World Sailing, Virtual Regatta),
  • Taekwondo (World Taekwondo, Virtual Taekwondo)
  • Tennis (International Tennis Federation, Tennis Clash),

The qualifiers of the tournament will begin shortly this week and will continue till May 15, 2023. The finals of the Olympic Esports Series 2023 will be held at Singapore’s Suntec Centre between June 22-25, 2023. The Series finals will be streamed on the official Olympic websites and across its social media platforms.

David Lappartient, the chairman of the IOC Esports Liason Group mentioned that the Olympic Movement brings people together in peaceful competition. He further mentioned that the Olympic Esports Series 2023 is a continuation of that legacy, with the ambition of creating more spaces to play for both players and fans of elite competition. David Lappartient further stated We look forward to witnessing some of the world’s best compete on the global stage, as well as exploring together shared opportunities and lessons – across health and wellbeing, training and innovation.

Lokesh Suji, the director of Esports Federation of India (ESFI) also shared his views on the Olympic Esports Series 2023. He said that previously, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) had incorporated virtual versions of traditional sports in parallel to Paris Olympics. It is encouraging to see that the IOC is continuing to embrace esports, and I have full confidence that it will soon be included as a medal sport, he added.
